Darkthrone release track from upcoming album

Norwegian veterans Norway Darkthrone will be releasing their new album, titled "Eternal Hails......", on the 25th of June through Peaceville Records. To give fans a taste of what they can expect, the band made an animated lyric video for the track "Hate Cloak", which has been uploaded to the official Peaceville Records YouTube channel earlier today:

Peaceville Records included the following under the video regarding the new release:

On Eternal Hails, the longer, doomier songs reflect drummer Fenriz’s love of doom, taking their time to make their point. For Fenriz, what he and co-conspirator Nocturno Culto have concocted stretches back even further than discovering black metal, to the sounds of the ‘70s and the more freewheeling sounds of bands playing with more expansive themes. This didn’t just make the songs longer, it made them an entirely different beast from the ground up.

This 9min 17 seconds, Fenriz penned, hallowed epic “Hate Cloak” is steeped in the majestic thunder of vintage heavy doom metal. Fenriz comments “Hate Cloak is certainly the slowest song on the album, there are plenty of “fast" parts on Ted's songs, middle tempos and slow as well. The whole point of us having long songs is variation in tempos/pace, hence the epicness”

I'm glad Norway finally realized what a national treasure Darkthrone are tbh, with their recent inclusion in the National Library (link). It's so cool that a band like this not only pioneered and then outlived the second wave of Black Metal but also came full circle to just keep on pumping out perfectly executed 80s worship, while also displaying enough discipline to keep a moderate distance from the glamour & spotlights.

There's nothing particularly new or original in this track, and I reckon if I heard this without knowing who the artist was I probably wouldn't have been moved at all, but there's something about it being Darkthrone and not another band that gives it that charm, at least for me (guess this makes me a fanboy). 30+ years and still going strong.

That said, I feel like it's lacking some energy that I know these guys are capable of, hope to encounter some Arctic Thunder-style bangers on the full album, I will be disappointed if all the tracks are in the same style, or rather, in the same tempo.

OK just read what they said, looks like this is indeed the slowest track and there will be some faster shit on the rest of the album. nice

Agreed! and might i add that it's nice that they treated them before it would be too late. a couple of days ago they inducted Quorthon to the Swedish Hall of Fame but it doesn't matter so much (btw, today marks the 17th anniversary of Quorthons passing which makes me wonder about this release on whether if it's just a coincidence or an "Eternal Hails....." to him!?)
anyway, as i was saying, from what i gather from various interviews and some critics on magazines,... they treated Bathory like shit when he was alive and now suddenly everyones a Bathory fanboy!

As Fenriz once said in an interview; we started playing the Celtic Frost/Bathory style Of BM in the 90s but so many people got into copying Bathory that we moved on and i started to just take the ways of Quorthon as an influence like not playing and not posing and shit like that (this may not sound right as i don't have the interview to quote from).

as you said, this is not that ground breaking and the whole album may not be that groundbreaking either but i don't think there is another band that still cares about their purity and legacy instead of just money. in this way i think they can be deemed a huge success as they still doing what they started to do which was paying homage to 80s legends. they never slipped from that path.

so as far as im concerned Darkthrone is the only band carriying the torch of true metal and will always have the respect they deserve even if they don't make more money than other bands,...

Damn, thanks for the heads up about Quorthon, I will add that to the "on this day" calendar.

And yeah, I guess there's a moderate chance it is a tribute to him indeed.

The sound is pretty dope, like a mixture of Trouble and Manowar's Hail to England
If there's more Candlemass mid tempo magic on the album I'd put this on my "must buy" list but I'm just as curious how the faster parts will turn out

You're absolutely right! there is a bit of old school Epic Heavy metal / Epic Doom Metal Going on here. Nocturno Culto's vocals are as Tom G Warrior as it gets and the Bass Sound is just sinister.

i'm a bit curious too. on the last 2 albums the doomier sections were pretty much my favs but i'm pretty sure it won't be mediocre!
